Synopsis
The Long Walk shows how grasses can be integrated into mixed borders. Deciduous grasses like molinias, panicums and pennisetums, turning shades of deep yellow and russet are interspersed with shrubs including low-growing scarlet Nandina domestica 'Firepower', clumps of flowering perennials like persicarias, Verbena bonariensis and asters, with taller shrubs and trees behind including deep pinky crimson Euonymus hamiltonianus subsp. sieboldianus, one of many fine spindle trees in the garden that radiate fiery autumn tones. A variety of heights creates a dense three-dimensional jigsaw puzzle of shape, colour and texture, intensely tactile and responsive to the slightest breeze.
