Synopsis
Set on the side of a steep valley above the River Frome near Bradford-on-Avon, this extraordinary garden was the creation and home of the architect and landscape designer Harold Peto who lived here from 1899 to 1933. The theme is Italianate with planting including cypresses, juniper, box and yew creating a setting for a huge collection of classical fragments Peto brought back from Italy on his many visits. In winter the elegant bones of the garden are thrown into relief, without the distraction of plants, while evergreens take the stage. William Cartwright-Hignett has taken over the running of the garden from his parents who rescued the garden from years of neglect. He and his wife Marianne are now working with head gardener Steve Lannin to reinvigorate Peto's planting in line with his philosophy.
