Synopsis
When Adrian and Peter found their Victorian house in Stockwell it was in need of some love, but they were drawn to the four-storey house by the size of the walled garden. They got to work and beautifully renovated the interior under architect, Peter's, direction before contacting Emma O'Connell to help them with the garden. Peter had designed a contemporary zinc clad building for the bottom of the garden, but its long narrow proportions were a challenge, along with the North/South aspect with one side baking in the sun, whilst the other is in the shade most of the day. The brief was straightforward - they wanted a garden which would allow them to indulge in their love to entertain, and with an aesthetic to match the character of their new home, utilising natural materials with dark accents. The narrow shape of the plot leant itself to a single axis that leads all the way down the garden to the zinc clad building. Both clients and designer were keen that this direct route be softened. Emma started by breaking up the large format contemporary paving with gravel, added a step over water feature and softened the whole garden with textural planting. Working with a restricted palette of plants that were chosen for their foliage, the result is a garden with movement, colour and architectural interest year-round.
