Compact Clematis from Raymond Evison

Today's clematis plants are very different from the old varieties, many of which have gorgeous flowers, but can be unruly and gangly, whereas modern cultivars are bred to be more compact in habit.

Synopsis
It is 60 years since Raymond Evison OBE VMH FLS developed his first clematis, naming the lovely white flower 'Edith' after his mother. It was the first of many of the world's most spectacular clematis that he has bred. 'My fascination with clematis started young, and endures unabated today as the quest continues to breed a scented, double-flowered clematis, that comes in a range of new colours, and has a long flowering period' says Raymond, eminent clematis breeder, horticulturalist, author and plant hunter. It is a passionate crusade that is rooted in the breeding programme run at Raymond's state-of-the-art, environmentally-friendly nursery in Guernsey. Here, countless plants are crossed each year, the resulting seedlings reared, and then thoroughly trialled. 'We first select mother plants that have a compact habit and a free-flowering nature with a range of strong colours' he explains.
