Synopsis
Designed to resemble pint-sized theatres, these shelving units became increasingly ornate, some with scalloped lead roofs, and others even came complete with velvet curtains and decorative backdrops. Traditionally, Auricula theatres were painted in dark shades to show off each flower's exquisite colours and markings. Face-to-face, the fragrant flowers are truly exquisite, with white or golden centres edged in flared skirts of frilly, overlapping petals in an array of rich, gem-like colours. As time has passed, these Lilliputian theatres have been used by plant collectors to display a variety of dwarf plants in a handsome setting: these include alpines, violas, pelargoniums, succulents, miniature hostas and small bulbs. And, by choosing a succession of plant groups that peak in different seasons, an Auricula theatre creates a lovely spectacle all year long.
