Synopsis
From the wilds of the Himalayas to the highs and lows of Tulipmania, tulips have emerged from a long and tumultuous history to take centre stage in fabulous festivals the world over. Closer to home, it is Pashley Manor Gardens that hosts a dazzling display, reaching a peak from mid-April with stars such as 'Mount Tacoma' or 'Ballerina', dancing through the colour-themed garden rooms of this eleven-acre garden. . It is a breathtaking sight, and one of which James and Angela Sellick, the garden's owners, never tire. 'Planning for next year's display starts each September when we choose the tulips and colour schemes' they explain. This starts with a leisurely tour of the garden, accompanied by the head and assistant head gardeners, Greg Ovenden and Fiona Gilman, and Chris Blom, director of supplier, Bloms Bulbs. 'We discuss what has worked especially well in previous years, and any ideas for new colour schemes. Chris then suggests bulbs to achieve a particular effect or, if a bulb is not available that season, possible alternatives,' explains Angela. It is not only colour that plays a major role in the decision process. So too do shape and form, with lily-flowered contrasting with peony-flowered, or sugar-coated with fringed edges. 'And we always check heights, to ensure taller tulips are planted at the back of beds, with shorter varieties to the fore,' she adds.
