Synopsis
It is now almost four decades since Brian and Josse Emerson bought their 250-year-old thatched cottage on a tranquil hillside overlooking Blackmore Vale. The south-facing garden was a typical Dorset strip — long, thin and wedged between the road and fields and, with both of them keen gardeners, it was soon bursting at the seams. So in the 1990s, they acquired an adjoining strip of land, and set about creating today’s half-acre splendour of sweeping borders overflowing with bold plant associations. They have also established a small nursery cultivating all their own plants, and Brian casts small garden ornaments.
