Synopsis
With a low budget but tall exotic plants that needed a frost-free environment to overwinter, enterprising homeowner Axton Burton turned to his local community for help. Together they donated over 4500 glass bottles which formed the walls of this custom greenhouse. Moss gathered from the garden fills any gaps while repurposed glass marbles add a splash of color. Tropical plants such as ice cream banana tree (Musa acuminata × balbisiana 'Blue Java'), Buddha's hand (Citrus medica var. sarcodactylis), star fruit (Averrhoa carambola) and Axton's favourite, finger limes (Citrus australasica) will benefit from high humidity over the winter. With that in mind a misting system has been installed that uses harvested rainwater in addition to a small fountain, discovered for free on craigslist. Neighbors, friends, and clients have been excited to watch the progress of this unique design and many have stopped by to visit. As a memento, they are invited to decorate, sign and hang one of the salvaged lids, their encouraging messages a daily reminder of all those who have been so supportive.
