Synopsis
'The relationship between interior and exterior space is especially intimate in courtyard gardens and the impulse is often to create another roofless room, but being true to the essential nature of a garden was key for the owners of this small courtyard. They craved a restful sanctuary, a garden with a related but distinct identity, filled with dynamic planting, ever-changing through the seasons and the years. Cutting the garden loose without severing the bond with the house was achieved by cutting into the existing deck that dominated the garden, whilst still affording access from the house on all sides. A level change, stepping down into the garden, physically and psychology aids the transition. The approach to design here is fluid, a broken path slows the passage of both eye and feet, whilst the clients much loved boulders are positioned to undermine the strong horizontal lines and add to the sense of depth. Planting is threaded through the space and will in time self-seed and loosen further. To the rear a new terrace, laid with buttery British sandstone and detailed with clay pavers serves as a spot for sunset dining. A veil of willowy Verbascum and swaying Stipa blurs the presence of the house and contributes to a sense of tranquility.' Plant list and garden plans available.
