Contemporary Courtyard in Autumn

It was the relaxed 'inside-outside' lifestyle of living in California that influenced the design of Ian and Armi Maddison's 20m x 18m, sunny walled courtyard, a blend of contemporary planting with salvaged treasures and homemade furniture.

Synopsis
Against the far wall rests a studio for Armi, an artist, that is linked to the house via a covered verandah that doubles as a dining area. 'Our outdoor season is lengthened in this very sheltered south-facing area, and in the cool of the evening we make use of an overhead heater and often sit out into the wee small hours, explains Armi. Only a mature Japanese maple remains of the original garden after the former Victorian cottage was given a contemporary makeover. 'Now, whenever you first enter the house, there is a 'wow' factor from the panoramic view of the garden. It's contemporary, secluded and totally unexpected,' says Armi.
