Synopsis
Unlike many gardens, York Gate is as interesting in the Winter months as it is during the summer. For in Winter when the beds are clear and the paths are wide, one can observe the carefully selected reclaimed and salvaged materials, that have been collected and used to great effect in the design of the Spencer family’s garden York Gate. Set in one acre comprising 14 different garden rooms, each room flows seamlessly to the next. Created in the Arts and Crafts tradition, the beauty is to be found in the detail of a narrow palette of reclaimed materials. Stone, granite, gravel wrought iron and wood are the materials that echo throughout the garden. Early adopters of the reclamation and salvage movement, The Spencer family saved materials and buildings from demolition and resurrected them at York Gate. The arbour and the Folly for example. York Gate is now in the custodianship of ‘Perennial’ formerly known as the Gardeners Benevolent society. Ben Preston is the head gardener and his team have overseen an extensive renovation of York Gate of late. Yet it is kept very much in the spirit of the Spencer family design. This feature is shot in the Winter months when the structure provided by the clipped and shaped box and yew in various shapes and guises can be appreciated at it’s very best, as well as the extensive collection of reclaimed and salvaged materials and ornaments.
