There is neither sight nor sound of traffic or of other inhabitants of the rolling Staffordshire landscape, a verdant vista of valleys and hills, copses and grasslands that never fails to delight Chris Bissell, an engineer whose work takes him to the driest places on earth. 'When I return home from a desert country, the first thing that hits me is the incredible greenness of England; everything looks marvellous, even the manure heap,' he points out. It comes from the unusually high rainfall and proximity to the hub of three great rivers — the Mersey, Trent and Severn — an irony that is not wasted on Chris. 'I've visited a town in Libya that has not seen rain since 1963.'
