When Doug and Sue Copeland bought their village home, it was as much for the potential to create a garden in the surrounding half-acre plot as for the beautiful views of the Essex countryside.

Synopsis
'At the time, the garden and adjoining meadow were almost completely bare so we had the 'blank canvas' so beloved of seriously keen gardeners,' they explain. However, with the site being totally exposed to biting easterly winds, they were faced with a dilemma. 'We had to plant a shelter-belt of trees, but didn't want to lose the views,' says Sue.
