Synopsis
Made entirely by them since 1987, Veddw House garden has been described by renowned writer Helena Attlee as the most “controversial garden in Wales” and by Stephen Anderton in his book “Discovering Welsh Gardens” (which was photographed by Charles) as a “wonderfully provocative and fascinating garden”. The garden has been voted one of the 100 Best Gardens in the UK by Garden News magazine. The garden has appeared in several books and it will be included in “Adventures in Eden” – an intimate Tour of Private Gardens in Europe by Carolyn Mullet to be published in September 2020. Situated in the Wye valleys Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty above Tintern, the 1 hectare (2 acre) garden has been deeply influenced in its design by both the landscape that surrounds it, by the people who have lived in the area in the past and by local history. The garden seems far bigger, being divided into a series of rooms, separated by tall hedges of Yew. Many of the hedges are cut into wave-forms which echo the surrounding landscape. The planting at Veddw is generally in bold colours and generous swathes of plants, often using vigorous plants that many gardeners would consider to be weeds. The garden is open to groups by appointment. Details about the garden can be found at the website veddw.com
