Colour is the aspect of Penny Burnfield's one acre garden near Stockbridge in Hants that gives her most pleasure.

"Leaf colour is as important to me than flower colour", explains textile artist Penny, "and I like to repeat colours across the garden to create a connection between different areas". Home to Penny and husband Sandy since 1975 when the cob and brick house was surrounded by a tangle of brambles and old bedsteads, Terstan is now framed by a garden of flowing spaces linked by circular and oval shapes. Set in open countryside just 100 yards from the River Test there are borrowed views aplenty across boundaries made using simple post and wire fencing but along with the gorgeous setting comes the risk of flooding. Penny describes the process of making the gravel garden: 'We made the gravel garden in 2008 in an area that was a muddle of features that didn't hang together. It's the driest part of the garden and gets a lot of sun so provides an opportunity to grow plants that don't do well elsewhere like sedums, bearded irises and grasses. Using pencil and paper to work out what shapes would fit within the vaguely rectangular plot I decided on three ovals of diminishing sizes and marked them out with bricks. One is filled with turf, the others remain simply as decorative shapes within the gravel. We planted through the gravel choosing plants for contrasting foliage shape, colour and texture. The creeping thymes have done incredibly well, so well I might have to start taking some out. Favourite combinations here include deep crimson Sedum 'Red Cauli' against the green and white stripes of Iris pallida 'Variegata'.' Beautiful garden, well designed and planted with lots of good transferrable ideas for gardens of all sizes.
