Synopsis
Before the redesign the garden lacked any flow, form or character. It was indeed a blank canvas save for some fine specimen trees. To create structure, hedges of Yew, Beech and hornbeam and Portugal laurel were planted to define the purpose of the different areas of the garden. Terraces and paths were created to suggest a route through the garden and low hedges of Lavender and box both created and softened the skeleton of the design. Amanda created beds planted with mixed herbaceous perennials and ornamental grasses to create a naturalistic feel. The key benefit of this style of planting being that it holds it’s interest throughout the winter into early spring. As Amanda says, ‘It is important that there is always something to enjoy and something to anticipate’. Shot on a frosty winter morning with deep blue skies this feature illustrates how well Amanda has created a functional yet beautifully designed family garden that looks equally stunning and sleek in winter as it does in the summer months.
