Synopsis
A beautiful, tasteful and relaxed country garden with borrowed views of the fells of Hutton Roof National Nature Reserve, Cumbria. At around 1.5 acres in size and built and designed entirely by the owners, Gail and David Sheal (lapsed doctors now ploughing a different furrow in the world of horticulture) Summerdale Garden is a serious of garden rooms that marry seamlessly into a unified vision. Gail (the driving force) has been developing the garden and nursery (aided by one daughter) at Summerdale since moving there in 1997. Laying paths, gardening, hosting visits, propagating plants, baking cakes and making jam - all the elements that make a visit to Summerdale special. Upon retiring from medicine, David then took the decision to work full time in the nursery and garden, taking the nursery forward in a different direction by supplying plants that can be seen in the garden and also developing a specialist interest in all shade loving perennials. The garden areas include a shade and pond garden, formal parterre garden, wild meadow and orchard garden, long perennial borders with lawns and an attached small nursery. 2019 will be the Nursery’s first showing at RHS Chelsea Flower Show.
