Synopsis
Vanessa Cook’s dream was to be self-sufficient when she and her husband bought their farmhouse with four acres back in 1975. Little did she know that nearly 45 years later she would be running a successful garden and nursery selling an extensive collection of hardy geraniums. When her daughters were younger Vanessa kept a Jersey cow, Bullock, sheep, poultry and bees. She planted up an orchard and grew vegetables and soft fruit. When her youngest daughter went to nursery Vanessa had the opportunity to study a course in horticulture at her local college, Askham Bryan College. Vanessa started propagating a few geraniums, she opened a couple of weekends a year and sold what she grew. With the help of a government enterprise scheme Vanessa was able to buy a couple of polytunnels, produce a small catalogue and open to the public on a regular basis. As her family grew and moved away Vanessa could devote more time to her garden and nursery business. The animals were downsized and the four acres became a beautiful garden and wild flower meadow. They discovered that the meadow upon which Vanessa had been grazing sheep, was ancient lowland meadow. She has since been reintroducing a range of native wild plants among which are three orchids. Yet it is in the garden with its long double borders that Vanessa indulges her real passion, hardy geraniums. Vanessa has always grown hardy geraniums as they fit in with what she describes as her “disorganised style of gardening’. And she is never happier than when a customer challenges her with a shady dark difficult corner of garden for her to recommend the most suitable geranium for. Vanessa loves hardy geraniums as they are so versatile, she feels that there is a variety suitable for the most inhospitable of places. This feature illustrates Vanessa’s collection of hardy geraniums beautifully with an extensive collection of stunning plant portraits. It also depicts Stillingfleet Lodge Garden and nursery looking at its very best during the summer month of June.
