Synopsis
This Regency house in Cambridgeshire was renovated in 2012 by its new owners. The previous family had lived in the house for almost fifty years; they planted many trees and hedges giving the garden structure. Hugo Nicolle, a garden designer who lives at nearby Chippenham Park, was asked to help with the garden. In 2015 new paving was added including York stone and Belgian pavers. Hugo also introduced some statement planting including the Carpinus betulus, box headed hornbeams in the pool garden, the Parasol pruned pears (Pyrus calleryana ‘Chanticleer’) and the pleached trained crab apple Malus 'Evereste'in the courtyard. The crab apples give joy in April with the wonderful blossom and in autumn with the fruit and leaf colour, the crab apples are still hanging on in November. Another highlight of the garden is the Aqualens water feature designed by Allison Armour, in the images the moving water has frozen creating patterns reflecting the light. The border in the pool garden has been carefully planted to create a long seasonal interest with Taxus baccata 'Fastigiata' - Irish Yews, Euphorbia characias subsp. wulfenii , Verbena bonariensis and a grass: Hakonechloa macra. In spring the border is also filled with Tulips, carefully planted and cared for by Svenja who works in the garden three days a week. Svenja is a very experienced gardener, she has worked for The Cambridge University Botanic Gardens and the RHS. An advantage of an early frost is being able to photograph long flowering roses like the wonderful pink rose - Rosa 'Bonica' – in this immaculately cared for garden. Size of garden approximately three acres.
