Synopsis
Twenty nine years ago when Jane Stevens first moved to this house the garden had not been tended for nine years and was almost completely overgrown. Before that it had been lovingly cared for by a keen gardener, a Norfolk countryman who had come to work on the railways 40 years previously. It was he who made the bird topiary from hawthorn and who planted the roses and many other plants that still survive. Being a countryman he made sure there was a rowan tree, holly and ivy as well as the hawthorn to keep the evil spirits away.
