Synopsis
Old Allangrange sits comfortably on the rolling hills of the Black Isle not far from the Moray Firth in the heart of the Highlands, the snowy peak of Ben Wyvis glistens in the distance. Only one, tiny road winds its way up the valley to deliver you to this undeniably attractive home. Jay Jay, her husband David and their two teenage children, Imogen and Geordie have lived here since 1995. This was the couples first house, and when they moved in it needed to be completely renovated as it had been neglected for many, many years. To some the task might have seemed daunting, but as an experienced furniture restorer Jay Jay simply took everything one step at a time. After the heavy work was completed on the house work was begun on the garden some 18 months later. 'I had always wanted to plant a garden' she explains, 'and there was plenty of scope, as there were only three apple trees, an ancient copper Beech and a grove of Yew trees when we arrived. 'I'm not a plantswoman. I like shape and form, I am fairly sure of myself there, but make more bad decisions about planting than good.' The house was the starting point, as Jay Jay explains, 'It feels like a Doll's house, neither grand nor ordinary, but it has pretensions.'
