Synopsis
Austin Lynch bought the impressive Georgian townhouse with his partner Tim Culkin in 1979. After substantial renovation to the house they turned their attention and talents to the garden. They were inspired by the topiary and roses in the romantic nearby garden St. Nicholas designed by Lady Serena James. Sloping steeply away from the house, the garden is divided into several sections by gravel pathways leading to the many nooks and corners of the garden. The one-third-of an acre garden is blessed with a south easterly aspect, beautiful old stone work, doorways and a dramatic flight of stone stairs that provide the perfect backdrop to the lush green planting. This feature captures the garden at Millgate house at Austin’s favourite time of year in spring, with the wonderful fresh surge of new growth seen in the extensive collection of Hostas and Ferns interspersed with Alliums. It also illustrates how through the clever selection and layering of plants combined with a succession of climbing shrubs what a wonderfully dramatic profusion and display of plants can be achieved in a relatively small space.
