Synopsis
Hedgehogs are excellent natural pest control for your garden as they eat insects and small mammals and they are also a joy to watch. Hedgehog numbers are on the decline in both urban and rural areas. Some reasons sited for the estimated 25% decline over the last 10 years are loss of hedgerows, use of pesticides, building developments and increase of road traffic. The concrete fence footings, so common now in suburban and urban gardens, are also a major contributing factor in the decline. Hedgehogs like to roam over a wide area and one small garden is not a big enough territory for them.
