Synopsis
There are 16 species of bat in the UK. The most common is the pipistrelle. Bats are a threatened species of mammal and their numbers are declining due to their favoured habitats disappearing with tree felling, repair of building cavities, barn conversions and lack of food (mainly insects). Bats can use our gardens as a place for shelter, feeding and a source of water. Bats need daytime roosting sites, winter hibernation and places to breed. Bats in Britain feed exclusively on insects and you can attract more insects to your garden by building a small pond or grow more night scented plants which attract more insects, especially moths.
