Synopsis
During height of the pandemic the owners of this small north facing garden in West London were home all the time and got tired of looking at their garden which was in a state of disrepair. They hired a local garden designer, Justin Morris-Wyatt to come up with a design that would replace the rotting railroad sleepers around the raised bed and the weed covered stepping stone path next to it. They wanted to replace concrete paving stones on the rear terrace and extend the terrace next the house which was an awkward curved shape. Justin's new design created a low curved wall made from reclaimed brick around the raised bed and a serpentine path of brick pavers. He replaced the concrete paving with York Stone on the rear terrace and extended the sandstone terrace next to the house making it straight across the back with a brick border allowing more space for a dining table and containers. Unfortunately work began in February and one week there was a deep freeze so work had to stop but the job was completed in about five weeks. The owners were unhappy with the light polluting garden lighting used by many of their neighbours so they opted for covered downlights along the brick wall reflecting light onto the path. The owners are quite keen gardeners and they were able to save most of the existing mature planting in the beds and added many of their own perennials in the borders when the landscaping work was finished. They collect pots by Whichford Pottery and they use the space on the new brick wall and extended terrace for pots full of colourful bulbs in the spring and annuals in the summer.
