London Garden - Brook Green

This London garden is on a difficult small site, near Hammersmith. It is very steep, and has been divided up by designer James Walsh into three sections to deal with this.

Synopsis
The lower section is a stone paved family patio with a wooden table. There is a recycled London brick wall and trellis, covered with Trachelospermum jasmnoides. And the patio and York stone steps leading into the main central section is lined with a raised bed and terracotta pots with vegetables. The main garden section has a small lawn surrounded by herbaceous borders, with favourites like roses, silver birch, Centranthus and grasses, with ferns and shade tolerant plants near fences. A step path leads across the lawn to the third section, a shady patio with pergola. This is covered by a favourite of James - a vine, Vitis vinifera Muscat de Hambourg, accompanied by a clematis, ‘Nelly Moser’. And the paved area beneath has plants like Pachysandra terminalis growing through the gaps, with self seeded Aquilegia. The garden has quite high boundaries for privacy, making the site a challenge, but the designer has successfully overcome this with a mixture of cool, green areas in the shade, and colourful planting in the sunnier spots, whilst creating a family and entertaining area as an extension to the kitchen and house.
