Synopsis
The topiary garden photographed in January on a snowy wintry day with a dramatic covering of snow sets off perfectly the ancient and extraordinary topiary characters and shapes that have been skilfully sculpted from Yew and box into an astonishing array of different shapes, sizes and characters in all their frosty glory. Levens Hall boasts the finest, oldest and most extensive collection of topiary in the world, with over 100 individually shaped pieces. The layer of snow beautifully highlights the forms and shapes in the ancient topiary garden, creating a visually stunning atmospheric winter wonderland that transforms the garden into a fantastic living sculpture gallery. Among the many geometric shapes are Chess pieces, a lion, Umbrellas, a jug of Morocco ale and four peacocks. Originally designed in the 1690's the garden still retains many of its original features, it has provided inspiration for many generations of gardeners interested in garden design and formal gardens. The historic extremely impressive levens Hall provides the perfect back drop for this magical fairy tale like winter wonderland garden. This features shows the ancient topiary garden at it's most beautiful and the craftsmanship of the head gardener Chris Crowder carefully sculpting his living art works.
