Synopsis
The Roof Gardens formerly known as Derry and Tom's Roof Gardens and Kensington Roof Gardens are situated 30 metres (100ft) atop a department store in Kensington, London. It is the oldest and best known roof garden in London, owned originally by Barker's department store vice-president Trevor Bowen who commissioned landscape designer Ralph Hancock to create the gardens in the 1930's. At 1.5 acres in size The Roof Gardens are the largest in Europe and are now owned by Virgin who took them over in 1981 as part of their luxury portfolio of Virgin Hotels Group Ltd.

The gardens have been restored and refurbished in recent years to look as they did in 1938. There are three themed gardens; a Spanish garden based upon the Alhambra in Granada, Spain with fountains, palms, vines and terracotta coloured buildings. A Tudor garden with archways, secret corners, lavender, wisteria and roses and an English woodland garden iwth a pond, garden stream and bridge and scores of trees many of which are still going strong from the original planting.
To top it off the gardens surround an exclusive two storey restaurant and night club where revellers can enjoy the gardens at night with amazing panoramic views over London structhing from Richmond Deer Park in the west all the way round across South London to city Point in the east. the roof gardens are located at 99 Kensington High Street and can be accessed from Derry Street.
