Synopsis
Dan and Alison Bosence have lived at Jeffrey’s Cottage for 36 years, gradually developing the garden as their children grew up and left home. Alison trained in textiles and has run a small business (as Alison Ellen) designing and producing hand knitwear for as long as they have lived here. She shows her work and teaches short courses in Britain and abroad, and has had four books published on knitting design. The garden is one of the main influences and inspirations behind her designs. Dyeing her own yarns has made her very aware of the subtleties of the colour shades displayed by plants and the relationships of colour combinations: for example, in the variety of greens from grey-green to acid yellows in foliage. She has taken part in exhibitions on the theme of inspiration from gardens, and also explored the technique of knitting to produce knitted pods and 3D pieces inspired by seed heads. Dan, who is a professor of geology at Royal Holloway, London University, has always been a keen organic vegetable grower and now produces vegetables to eat throughout the year with the help of cold frames and a greenhouse. They manage the garden between them, each in their own area – Dan doing the vegetables, Alison the flower borders, with both trying out new plants from seed every year.
