January Container of Winter Wonders

In deepest winter, the garden sleeps, or so it would appear. In fact, nature is very much awake as a select cast of delicate flowers unfurl from within frost-encrusted buds.

These are not the eye-catching attention-seekers of high summer, but dainty, retiring blooms that project subtle colour, fragrance and forms onto a pared-down garden landscape. Amongst the most eye-catching are bulbs that, having lain dormant for months on end, now emerge to bring unrivaled beauty. One of the best places to display these little treasures is in a broad shallow basket which, if placed close to the house on terraces, balconies or patios, can be viewed from indoors.
