Synopsis
This lovely garden is packed full with a riot of colour, scent and texture throughout summer, set around a 'chocolate-box' thatched cottage 250 years old. Owners Brian and Josse Emerson combine herbaceous perennials with unusual annuals in beds and borders as well as a host of pots and containers, with dahlias playing the starring role in late summer. The garden layout is determined by a huge oak, once on a hedge line, which casts shade and gives character to the west of the site. Brian and Joss are keen e-bayers and recyclers so there are lots of quirky and salvaged items and structures around the garden, for instance the outside 'privy' with its little stained glass windows and Victorian inspired 1970s fittings covered with botanical images. With so many nectar plants the garden is a feast for bees and butterflies as well as human visitors who can refresh themselves with Josse's famous cakes! The garden is open for the National Garden Scheme, and the attached nursery is open on Thursdays from March to August.
