Synopsis
The house was designed by Eric Francis and built around 1922-23 for Architectural editor of Country Life magazine, Henry Avray Tipping (1855-1933), but was only briefly his home. Tipping was one of the most respected authorities on the history, architecture and gardens of English houses. He was the Architectural Editor of Country Life from 1907 until his death in 1933. Tipping laid out and planted the garden and the grounds are Grade II* listed by CADW. He only lived there between 1927 and 1930. The current owners, who have been there since 2000, have been using Tippings plans and photographic records of the garden for their thoughtful restoration. There can't be many people who would take out a modern swimming pool next to the house and replace it with a 100 foot double herbaceous border ending in Tippings pergola. The result is a Jekyll inspired triumph of elegance and planting restraint in whites, blues, purples and greens. Running next to this a long straight path is lined with lavender. Two terraces by the side of the house have stunning views over the Vale of Usk towards the distant Brecon Beacons are similarly planted. Below here, steps descend to a charming octagonal lily pool and little fountain with narrow borders planted with roses. The gardens in total extends to 12 acres.
