The UK hedgehog population has been in dramatic decline over the last few decades, there are thought to many factors contributing to this worrying loss. Loss of habitat is one concern, garden fencing and boundaries that stop them gaining access to enough territory and food is another problem and also safe places to hibernate are becoming more scarce in our increasingly built up residential areas. You can do your bit easily with a homemade hedgehog house. In this series a young girl creates a house using left over bricks and roof tiles, from autumn onwards leave the house well alone and undisturbed through winter to give the sleeping hedgehog the peaceful safety needed to get them through the cold months.
