Synopsis
This modern cottage garden around an old stone barn is on a tricky sloping site on the edge of Hastings Country Park that gets lashed by the sea wind. The owner Tara, a plant consultant who worked at Great Dixter for many years, built a raised deck, with views of the countryside and sea and a terrace of raised beds. Part potager but with a backbone of perennials and grasses, the planting changes throughout the seasons. In June the beds are filled with perennials such as Catmint, Salvias, Linaria and Cirsium, while annuals such as Marigolds, Valerian, Fennel and Foxgloves are allowed to self-seed. The beds are shared with veg including Broad Beans, Asparagus, Salads and herbs. There are also hens and the handsome Cockerel Mr. Cockadoodle. Beyond, meadows have been established with young fruit trees and a living willow tunnel.
