Ellicar

With a former life as a residential home for troubled teenagers Ellicar was an institution rather than a home when Sarah and Will Murch took it on. However, Sarah and Will could see past the chaos to the site's potential as a long term family home.

Synopsis
Though Sarah designed a garden that looks good throughout the year the priority for her and Will is always wildlife. 'We try not to be too tidy and don't just cut things back to suit us but think about the implications of what we do for invertebrates and birds. For instance we leave dead material standing until March as habitat for overwintering insects and food for birds.' It looks beautiful in low winter sun and coated with a heavy frost too as well as providing a foil for strong evergreen shapes or the bare branches of shrubs and trees.
