Derry Watkins Special Plants Garden in Early Summer

In early summer, this country garden in an idyllic valley near Bath enjoys a first flourish of flowers. A variety of poppies provide pops of colour amongst the varied and vibrant foliage of newly emerging plants, which will flower later in the season.

This is the garden of respected plantswoman Derry Watkins, who runs the Special Plants Nursery on the same site. The soil is mostly clay which has been improved with regular mulching over the past 25 years, but nearer the house are areas of gravel for plants that prefer free drainage. The gravel gardens are particularly beautiful at this time of year with many interesting umbellifers at their flowering peak. The garden is open on Tuesdays throughout the summer and on some Thursdays for the National Gardens Scheme.
