Synopsis
The private organic garden of two American garden designers is attached to a wholesale nursery specialising in unusual, tender and exotic tropical plants. Located on Long Island near New York , the garden is 1.2 hectares (2.5 acres) in size. Elements of English formal garden with clipped hornbeam hedging dividing informal mixed borders of perennials, shrubs, bulbs, annuals, grasses and exotic tropical plants. The garden was designed and planted by the owners including the summer house or 'tiki hut' which they built themselves. Bill and Dennis set up the nursery together, initially growing unusual annuals and moved to Long Island in 1992 trading under the name Landcraft Environments.

The farm and land they moved into required a lot of work, clearing and then landscaping, initially they planted beds and yew hedges near the house and created a lawn and then expanded it with the hornbeam hedges creating enclosed borders and finally the informal meadow and large pond, beyond which are farmer's fields. As the nursery expanded they began to keep larger tropical plants that also found their way into the garden, so there is a real eclectic mix of plants many of which you would never expect to see together. Due to the harsh winters many of these exotics have to be removed and over-wintered in greenhouses and others (including some perennials and grasses) are treated as annuals and are allowed to die off and are then replanted the following year.
