Owner, Sally Frederick, commissioned Mike Harvey to re-design a plain patio area to offer a fragrant scented space with a sense of enclosure and which incorporated an outdoor dining area, and provided a visual succession of planting. The existing Indian stone paving was lifted in certain areas to create beds and pathways to give a feeling of journeying through the space and some texture was added using gravel for a small pathway leading to an old pump and some reclaimed bricks were found for edging some of the beds. The majority of the planting is low using Lavenders ‘Hidcote’ and ‘Munstead’ with Pittosporum ‘Tom Thumb’, Box hedging and the larger boundary edges are filled with Hydrangea ‘Annabelle’. After 5 years of searching Sally found a c.1920’s French reconstituted well head complete with it’s wrought iron overthrow from an antique shop in Kent, which has now replaced the brick structure around the well. It sits harmoniously with the planting in its new English surroundings.
