Synopsis
The beautiful old brick wall that surrounds this recently renovated property provides the perfect foil for the planting and design of this award winning contemporary garden. The creation of different levels and terraces reflect the linear design of the house yet are softened by the buffer of textural mixed planting that surrounds the property. Here the planting is used to define and enclose the individual spaces that flow from the house into the garden. Privacy is created for the areas leading from the bedrooms yet is left open and fluid from the reception rooms, seamlessly blurring the boundary from the interior to the exterior. A restricted palette of grasses and perennials are used throughout the garden to knit together the individual spaces and create cohesion. A generous lawn sweeps around the house to the pool, providing space to play. The use of water close to the house plays with the light and creates wonderful reflected views of the sky. With the movement and texture provided by the carefully considered mass planting of grasses this garden is a beautiful example of contemporary naturalistic garden design, deserving of the Society of Garden Designers (SGD) Medium Size Garden Award in 2019.
