Synopsis
The garden at Clover Cottage is a perfect English cottage garden with rose arches around the meandering path. It was always the owner’s dream to live in the countryside and sixteen years ago (2003) Shirley and her husband Paul found the perfect 17th century cottage in the Cambridgeshire countryside. There were hardly any plants so almost everything has been planted and designed by Shirley in the quarter of an acre garden. The front garden faces south and its borders are full of perennials, bulbs and climbers including lupins, hardy Geraniums, Delphiniums, Verbascums, Alliums, Aquilegias, poppies, clematis and honeysuckle. There are over thirty rose varieties including many bred by David Austin from his English rose series including: Rosa 'Geoff Hamilton' and Rosa 'Winchester Cathedral’. There are older roses; Rosa 'Phyllis Bide’ a small, scented, rambling rose grows abundantly around the arch near the house. The garden at the back of the cottage has a pond full of fish and an arbour for admiring the garden. A beautiful old wall creates shade where hostas, ferns and Dicentra thrive. The garden is open is open with the NGS on the first Sunday in June every year. The garden is also open with the NGS’s ‘Snowdrop Festival’ for the last two Sundays in February and the first Sunday in March.
