Synopsis
Penny has dressed the garden with old stone troughs, galvanised metal baths and watering cans, weathered terracotta urns and peeling metal gates; the delicious planting is a mix of shrubs, herbaceous plants and trees that have a gnarled, aged look to them even when young including corkscrew hazel and unusual Robinia ‘Twisty Baby’. On a south-facing slope the garden is divided into distinct rooms around an L-shaped barn, and includes many evergreen and clipped shrubs, one of the reasons the garden looks great all through the year. Borders are often colour-themed around a particular rose, including the orange borders, designed to complement Rosa Duchess of Cornwall.
