When they bought their home in Key West the small rear yard was a dilapidated pool surrounded by a rotting wooden deck.

The owners are both industrial designers living between Denmark and Florida they wanted to restore both the property and the outside space in the old classic Key West style they both loved. They kept the rectangular shaped pool design but working with Craig Reynolds award winning landscape architect and designer selected pool and plant materials that created the colour and feel of a lagoon. The pool is plastered with a material that makes it look a very dark blue. To achieve the old Key West look wherever possible they laid old brick as in their words it is ‘modest’ and doesn’t ‘try to be showy’. They wanted to create a shady tropical feel, thankfully there were existing large multi trunk palms in the yard as Craig says; they create a lot of drama and act as sculptures’. Other palms were selected to create the stunning and atmospheric overhead canopy which is reflected dramatically in the pool. Elsewhere a range of tropical looking plants including Philodendron wilsonii are repeat planted to create a uniform tropical look and feel. The owners agree as they relax in their beautiful outside space that Craig has succeeded in transforming their shady run down yard into a classically stylish Key West tropical retreat.
