Synopsis
The rugged coastline, crystal clear light and inspirational wild beauty of the Penwith peninsula has lured artists and writers to the far western tip of Cornwall for centuries. Carol and Robert Moule were attracted to Lamorna, a small village south of Penzance once home to painters Laura Knight and Alfred Munnings, by the promise of life beside the sea and the opportunity to create a garden in a heart-stopping location. The view from Carol and Robert's house is a striking combination of natural drama and human creativity and determination as layers of intricate planting stretch eastward toward the sea. Neatly gravelled paths are framed with tall cabbage palms wearing topknots of spiky leaves and bold phormiums of assorted colours and stripes including deep purple, pink, yellow and green, contrasting with diaphanous bamboos and grasses to form a permanent structure amongst which smaller, more delicate plants find shelter. Late summer sees a kaleidoscope of intensely coloured flowers blooming across the valley side, many deriving from South Africa, perfectly fitted to the site's gritty, fast draining soil. Deep orange red Watsonia 'Stanford Scarlet' mingles with blue agapanthus, delicate Bulbine frutescens with its spikes of starry orange and yellow flowers, and arching crocosmias ranging from intense scarlet 'Lucifer' to soft apricot 'Merryman'. Succulents including dark purple Aeonium 'Zwartkop' and blue-green Agave americana add strong, fleshy shapes in borders, in large stone troughs on the terrace and in pots that can be taken indoors for winter protection.
