Synopsis
14 acres of beautiful gardens set within ancient ruins and ringed by a tranquil moat, the Bishop's Palace garden has been at the heart of the small Somerset town of Wells for centuries, shaped by a succession of bishops. Recently Bishop Peter Price instigated the creation of the Garden of Reflection, a contemporary space containing a 3m high poustinia, a simple spiral enclosure designed for contemplation, surrounded by a flowery meadow of white stemmed birches, studded in spring by pheasant's eye narcissus and deep crimson tulips 'Red Shine'. Head Gardener James Cross and his team have regenerated the garden over the past decade with a programme of replanting. In spring, beds designed to reflect the pattern of one of the stained glass windows on the adjacent cathedral burst with multicoloured tulips including lily flowered red 'Aladdin', 'Purple Dream', orange 'Ballerina' and yellow 'West Point'. In the formal East Garden, Euonymus 'Green Spire' is used as an alternative to box hedging and spring flowering peas, corydalis and euphorbias, amongst unfurling ferns provide interest before summer unfolds in a mass of colour including the whole suite of 'bishop dahlias'. There are ancient trees too, plus areas of moisture loving plants such as rheums, lobelias, hostas and astilbes that revel in the spring waters bubbling up through the ground that give the town its name. Lots of contemporary planting in a place that oozes history through every pore; a great combination.
