Synopsis
The Garden celebrates Native New Zealand plants and modern design against a back drop of lush vineyards and the Richmond Range of Mountains South Island New Zealand beyond. Named after the Sanskrit word for 'Earth Goddess' or 'Mother Earth' Bhudevi garden is set around a stylish and contemporary modern home with its organic sauvignon blanc vineyard together with an outdoor sculpture garden, a formal modern garden and a garden containing many species some of which are used in traditional Maori medicines and native to New Zealand. The garden with its distinct areas creates dramatically different atmospheres in each area. The uber modern and stylish contemporary feel around the house with clean straight lines and formal planting, swimming pool and modern outside fire pit demonstrates to stunning effect the views through the house to the mountain ranges beyond. The shadows cast by the modern oculus in the roof seen with the modern materials used in and around the house create an almost futuristic effect. This is in stark and dramatic contrast with the native and less formal garden around the creek with its loose, textural, transparent grasses and shrubs, weeping willows, extensive array of native new Zealand plants with a few sculpture from their collection displayed . Here native new Zealand species have been planted in such a way to create a truly tranquil, peaceful and spiritual space. The contrast between the gardens and the areas around the house and the vineyards is dramatic yet there is one unifying and clear theme that runs through Bhudevi Estate Garden, an appreciation for good design combined with a care and consideration for native New Zealand plants. This feature captures to stunning effect the creation and vision of Bruce Lee Miller and his wife Dr Jane Casey which combines their love of Native New Zealnd plants, Asian art, appreciation of history, nature and modern design surrounded by the simply breathtaking New Zealand scenery.
