Synopsis
For Kate and Hitesh Patel bamboos are not only great garden plants but also a reminder of happy years spent in Southeast Asia where they grew it on their balcony in Bangkok, as well as time spent 'courting in the bamboo grove in Kew Gardens'. The one acre garden around their home on the slopes of the Wye Valley near Chepstow features bold stands of golden stemmed bamboos amongst many other grasses that look beautiful all year round. Returning to the UK in 2001 Kate and Hitesh lived in London for a while before heading west to find 'space to make a proper garden'. They moved to Barn House in Brockweir in 2006 bringing with them two Luton van loads of plants including bamboos, grasses and a big specimen jasmine. 'The front garden was a rough field full of thousands of daffodils and a few trees and the back garden was choked with bindweed and brambles but we could see the potential', recalls Kate. Twelve years on their 'proper garden' is a masterpiece of inspired planting that looks striking twelve months of the year, a dazzling mix of grasses planted en masse, as striking specimen plants in pots or interspersed with resilient herbaceous perennials and bulbs that introduce splashes of bright colour in summer and frost catching seed heads through the winter. In late summer the grasses are flowering, as are late season perennials like rudbeckias and persicarias, asters, sedums and dahlias. Hydrangeas are flowering and the stems of the many bamboos glow deep yellow.
