Synopsis
Arundel Castle is famous not only for the building itself but also the surrounding gardens, which are regularly opened to the general public. Amongst the extensive, elaborate gardens lies a quiet, far more intimate space: The Stumpery. A small garden in its own right, it is brimming with ideas to 'take home'. The planting is beautiful throughout the seasons, and even with the bare bones of winter, sculptural tree trunks are skilfully placed throughout the garden, and the striking evergreen clipped hedging catches the eye. The colourful floral display starts in the spring with generous swathes of euphorbia, hellebores and ferns. And there are dainty pops of colour with creative underplanting. As we are increasingly aware of the need to provide shelter for insects, this garden is also ideal with so many little hiding places amongst the tree stumps.
