At Yews Farm in the small Somerset market town of Martock, Louise and Fergus Dowding have made a garden that is formal in layout yet exuberantly planted, where vegetables migrate into the ornamental beds and ornamentals edge the vegetable plot. This is a contemporary family garden that combines practicality with style, a strong sense of design and an obvious love of plants.

Louise is a garden designer and is in charge of ornamentals while Fergus’ domain is the veg patch. He employs organic and bio-dynamic principles, paying as much attention to the health of the soil as to the plants. Pigs and hens play an important part in the whole system, recycling compost into eggs, meat and manure, whilst any surplus produce is sold on at the local market so nothing is wasted – the garden at Yews Farm is as satisfyingly complete as a perfectly balanced equation and shows that the productive garden can still be the beautiful garden.
